Lot 2704		1838 Liberty Seated Half Dime. Stars, no drapery. NGC graded MS-65. A well struck little gem, beautifully toned. Beginning at the Philadelphia Mint in 1838 and continuing through November 1840, working dies for the Seated Half Dime were sunk from the No Stars hub of 1837. However, 13 stars were added by being hand-punched into these working dies around the obverse border. This type with Liberty's portrait style of 1837 and 13 obverse stars is known to numismatists by the name of "No Drapery," and it was produced in only three calendar years. The first-year 1838, therefore, enjoys greater collector demand than one might initially suspect for an issue that is among the more often seen in the early Seated Half Dime series. This, of course, is due to Type-collecting pressure. For the buyer who will accept nothing less than the most attractive specimens for his collection. Estimated Value $1,250 - 1,300. Lot 2705		1852-O Liberty Seated Half Dime. NGC graded MS-65 PL PQ CAC Approved. The obverse displays lovely rainbow toning. The reverse exhibits a light hint of gold tone. Looks like a Proof coin. Pop 1; none finer at NGC. The only PL example graded by the service. When it comes to New Orleans Mint silver bearing the date 1852, rarity is the order of the day. In the specific case of the '52-O Half Dime, survivors from this 260,000-piece mintage are generally found in lower grades (when they are available at all). The issue becomes scarce higher up the ladder with Mint State coins being nothing if not rare. At the top of Condition Census lies this exquisite Prooflike MS65, a multicolor Gem that possesses a full endowment of satiny mint luster supporting the electric blue and lavender-with-gold iridescence. The strike is better than average, although soft on the right-hand stars as well as Liberty's head and hair, rather typical for the issue, but there are no outwardly noticeable abrasions to draw your attention. An extremely important representative of an issue that probably saw extensive melting during the chaotic early years after passage of the Coinage Act of 1853 which reduced the silver content of America�s minor coins and caused widespread withdrawal and melting of earlier issues (PCGS # 4350) . Lot 2706		1858 Liberty Seated Half Dime. NGC graded MS-67. Lovely rainbow toning. This is a superb blemish-free case in point of the With Stars Half Dime (1840-59) in this grade: sleek pastel colors, with mint bloom that captures the full effect of the careful preservation since it was made. We leave behind the pristine surface and luster though we might linger with further narrative, and move on to the devices. Even the most delicate detail seen on this coin shows it was made with uncommon exactness for the issue. Pop 25; 4 finer in 68. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,100. Lot 2707		1859 Liberty Seated Half Dime. PCGS graded Proof 61. Housed in a First Generation Holder. Well struck and lightly toned. Only 800 Proofs made. The 1859 issue is unique in having hollow center stars from a new hub that introduced that year only to be surplanted by Longacre's revisted Legend Obverse motif in 1860 (PCGS # 4438) . Lot 2709		1863 Liberty Seated Half Dime. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. Lightly toned. Only 460 Proofs struck. Nice contrasting devices with fields that swirl with mirror luster. It is interesting to see, as well, that it was struck from well-prepared dies that imported a sound and in point of fact, a bold design in all areas. Scarce Civil War era Proof (PCGS # 84446) .
